Industry Talks 2021
Connecting TAFE to Industry
As the cyber security industry grows into one of the most important to Australia’s sovereign capability, TAFE colleges around Australia need to provide lecturing staff with opportunities to remain current with the latest cyber security skills and knowledge. To support this TAFEcyber is providing its lecturers with access to Australia’s industry leaders in cyber security through its series of professional development opportunities - Connecting TAFE with industry.
As part of the project’s third milestone, industry professionals were invited from different states and from a variety of companies to contribute and be a part of our Industry Talks series. This allowed our national consortium to join online presentations and Q&A time with industry leaders and innovators.
Our Industry Talk series included the following topics and presenters:
Mitre Attack Framework, presented by George Coldham, Empired
Digital Trust – How AustCyber is helping secure our economy, presented by Paula Oliver, AustCyber South Australia Cyber Security Innovation node
Zero to p0wn3d and no 0 days – A critical infrastructure red team case study, presented by Murray Goldschmidt, CyberCx
Security testing in the public cloud, Presented by Tony Marceddo, ECU University
Wifi Security – Your WiFi is NOT secure! Presented by Tracie Thompson and Mike Thompson, HackHunter
Organisational Security Standards & Frameworks – What’s in use across Australia and why? Presented by Aaron Doggett, Trustwave
Careers in Cyber, presented by Simon Carabetta, AustCyber
Sense, Scents and Cents: The benefits and complexities of digital eyes, noses and mouths, presented by Jonathan Kempe, Verifai
“The Mitre Framework presentation was brilliant, the presenter showcased how it can be used to train our students to maintain a secure environment”.
“Our staff learnt valuable knowledge on securing cloud services, WiFi security and security standards/frameworks - All vital aspects in today's Cyber world.”
With real life case studies our consortium members were able to test their skills and understand current challenges to secure organisational systems and deal with cybercrime. They were also provided an opportunity to hear first-hand about new products and devices in the industry.
Covering how to enter the cyber workforce as a student, an open discussion was held with a mix of TAFE staff and students to identify the pathways and methods to gain employment. Students were encouraged to participate in local and national cyber competitions such as Capture the Flag challenges and complete specific cyber/IT related certifications.
TAFEcyber would like to thank all the industry professionals who presented to the consortium members and for providing such useful cyber world experiences. The feedback from participants have been positive, resulting in annual TAFEcyber Industry talks still to come.
